This blog is a bit of an ongoing resolution machine. In the spirit of accountability and follow-through, I want to pause in the last rays of 2010 sunshine, and take a look at what I’ve said I’d do so far (no matter how indirectly I committed myself) and what I’ve actually done.
1. “While I will continue to write about Yiddish and the Yiddish world, I also will expand this blog to include all the possibilities of the person I am in the process of becoming.” I don’t think I’ve blogged enough about Yiddish and the Yiddish world….
2. Banishing “bare minimum thinking”. Hard to measure. I think so….
3. Stop complaining so much, at least publicly. I’ve really been trying to do this, especially at work. I try not to complain about how much I have to do, how many emails, and so on.
4. “Don’t rush translation! Don’t just guess! Be thorough.” It’s funny; while my instinct is still to rush and to guess, this dynamic is now also something I’m exploring in the solo piece I’m working on this year.
5. (From the same post) “So I’m going to go to class, and I’m going to like it.” I like going to class, but getting to Hebrew class has been very challenging sometimes, particularly on Monday mornings. I need to do better at juggling work and Drisha.
6. Don’t forget my connection to Yiddish, even as I try to figure out my own “thing”. Again, hard to measure. But I did recently become recommitted to the Yiddish world I sort of burnt out on… stay tuned.
7. Focus on one thing that I want to be at a time. Doing this pretty well!
8. “Figure out how to balance my deep, dark need for sweets with my brain and my body.” Nope, still have to figure that one out.
9. “I want to be ruthless. I want to own less things.” Yes, the war on stuff is still raging. Getting rid of a lot of clothes at the moment.
Really pretty, but, again, almost impossible to measure.
11. Staying on a diet and logging what I eat. Still going strong on the food log, and I’ve lost about five pounds. I’m eating sweets, though, and not taking the stairs often enough.
Overall, not bad, but could definitely do better. Here’s to keeping the everyday resolutions we’ve already made. Happy 2011!
